West Orange is a township located in Essex County that is home to a population of approximately 46,000 residents year-round. This township is surrounded by two large parks – the South Mountain Reservation and the Eagle Rock Reservation, providing residents and visitors alike with picturesque views throughout the year.
The West Orange Public School System serves school-aged residents ranging from kindergarten through the twelfth grade. There are seven elementary schools in the district – Gregory Elementary, Hazel Avenue Elementary School, Mount Pleasant Elementary School, Pleasantdale Elementary School, Redwood Elementary School, St. Cloud Elementary School, and Washington Elementary School. For middle school-aged residents, they have the option of attending either of the three middle schools in the township – Thomas A. Edison Central Six School, Liberty Middle School, or Roosevelt Middle School. All students then attend West Orange High School for grades 9 through 12.
Sports and other recreational activities are engrained within the culture in West Orange. The Richard J. Codey Arena is located within the township, where the Jersey Rockhoppers play their home games and where the New Jersey Devils used to practice for almost 20 years. Aside from hockey, there are many different leagues set up throughout all age ranges of residents. Additionally, the two reservations that border West Orange have trails set up for hiking and running.
The central downtown area is the Essex Green Shopping Center, which houses a variety of stores, restaurants, a movie theather, and, most notably, a dine-in movie theater that is wildly popular with residents and visitors.
